Copenhagen University Unlocks New Potential To Lupins

Lupins, a rising protein crop, are valued for their high protein content, making them a sustainable and nutritious option for human and animal consumption. However, new research has unveiled an exciting dimension to these versatile crops. A groundbreaking study led by Fernando Geu-Flores' research group at Copenhagen University demonstrates how lupins can be transformed into a powerful source of (−)-sparteine, a valuable, but limitedly available molecule in organic chemistry.

The Power of (−)-Sparteine

(-)-Sparteine is a key auxiliary alkaloid compound in chiral synthesis, a process critical for producing enantiomerically pure compounds in industries like pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. Despite its potential, its variable price and limited availability have hindered large-scale adoption. This research marks a game-changing moment by creating narrow-leafed lupins (NLL) to accumulate large amounts of (-)-sparteine with remarkable purity (99% enantiomeric excess).

The Role of Our Technology

Using FIND-IT technology, we have identified and isolated a knockout mutation in the CYP71D189 enzyme in a bitter lupin library. This pathway increased (-)-sparteine accumulation to 96% of the total alkaloid content in lupin seeds. This discovery not only confirmed (-)-sparteine as the precursor to quinolizidine alkaloids (QAs) but also showcased the ability to enhance valuable metabolites in a crop without compromising yield and other plant traits.
